This Togouchi 12 Year Old Japanese blended whisky is produced by the Chugoku Jozo Liquor company. Chugoku Jozo age their whiskies in a series of tunnels in the Sandankyo Mountains instead of using more traditional warehousing. It was back in 1990 the company decided to try the production of a blend and, to be more precise, Chugoku Jozo does not distille whisky but imports it already distilled, directly from Scotland for malt whisky and from Canada for grain whisky. Only the operations of aging and blending are performed by Chugoku Jozo master blenders.
The name Togouchi comes from the town in Japan where the tunnels which the whisky is aged in are located.
This high malt content blend is made using a reasonably high percentage of peated single malts. This whisky has an intense nose with citrus, green apples and smoke, followed by a dry and fresh palate with both smoke and peat showing through, with a smokey yet gentle finish.
